Keydy Vasquez-Cerrato English Junior Year 17 August 2017 Growth Do you think you could survive the yellow fever? Matilda "Mattie" Cook could, and did in the bookFever 1793by Laurie Halse Anderson. First her mother got sick with the fever and sent Mattie to a farm outside of town, with her Grandfather. Soon afterwards, Matilda caught the fever and Grandfather carried her to a hospital in Bush Hill. After struggling at home for a while to find food, thieves came and Matilda defended the house with Grandfather. Soon afterwards, Grandfather passed away. The next morning Matilda looked around town and found their coffeehouse cook, Eliza, her brother, and nephews. Eventually, Eliza's nephews and a lost homeless girl, Nell, got sick and were taken to the coffeehouse. Once the frost came almost all of the sick got well so Eliza and Matilda opened up the coffeehouse together. Then, Matilda's mother returned home, tired, but alive. Matilda had grown up, metaphorically and literally, into a young adult during the course of the book. Some examples of Matilda growing up into a young adult are her surviving the fever, all of the people dead around her, and running the Cook Coffeehouse with Eliza. Surviving the yellow fever was a big experience for Matilda to go through. It really opened her eyes to the world of life and death. For example, the death cart man at Bush Hill said, "She looks dead." (97) For somebody to think you are dead is a very bad sign. Matilda must have been in really bad shape. Although to survive is a very eye opening experience. This next quote is said by Matilda's nurse in Bush Hill, Mrs. Flagg. "You've beat the Grim Reaper, you have lassie... we weren't sure you'd make it through the night," (99) Matilda was so sick that doctors didn't know if she would survive the night. Beating the Grim Reaper was an astonishing feat for anyone to do. Seeing all of this evidence made it very clear that surviving the yellow fever attributed to Matilda becoming a young adult. Another thing that helped with Matilda growing up is all of the people dead around her. One short quote, said by Matilda's mother was extremely important to the story, "Matilda, Polly's dead." (13) First, it was the start of the yellow fever epidemic of 1793. Second, Matilda knew Polly pretty well, as a servant and a friend. To lose her first must have been terrible. Another quote that supports her maturity was said by Matilda when she exclaimed, "Dead? Grandfather couldn't be dead." (147) Right when Grandfather passed away, Mattie took his death okay. Then the next morning, it seemed more real to Mattie. Lastly, much later, Matilda learned to accept all of what had happened. During the book Matilda learned to accept death of friends and family much better. In closing, all of the people dead and dying around Mattie contributed to her maturing and learning how to deal with grief. The last thing that demonstrated Mattie's growing up process is handling all of the work of running the coffeehouse. This is said by Matilda's mother about going shopping. It is, "No Matilda must stay home. I shall go." (25) This quote is important to the story because it shows that at the beginning of the book, Matilda was not even allowed to go shopping for the coffeehouse, much less run it. She wasn't nearly as respected as she became. My second quote was from the end of the book, when Matilda was running the coffeehouse. The quote is thought by her, here it is, "Free samples were proving to be a clever way to get customers to eat more." (228) Once she started running the coffeehouse, Mattie learned all of the tips and tricks to getting more money. She really became the owner after that. After the struggle of getting it up and running, owning the coffeehouse really helped the metamorphosis Matilda went through. So, after all of this information it is obvious that Mattie has gone through a metamorphosis into a young adult. From her surviving the yellow fever at Bush Hill. The poems are touching as they both release a feeling of sorrowful sensation suggesting their subject but give us different viewpoints which we can relate to. This essay is going to discus primary the distinction between the two poems that hold on the same matter. The poem War Photographer discusses the theme of death from the perspective of modern warfare. In the poem we are introduced to a photographer who develops the pictures he had taken from the war thus provoking his thoughts and feelings ‘he remembers the cries of this man’s wife’ looking at the suffering they portray ‘spools of suffering set out in ordered rows’ and the ignorance with which they are met by the median reader ‘the reader’s eyeballs prick with tears between the bath and pre-lunch beers’. The other poem Remember talks about the prospect of death from the viewpoint of someone who projects her probable death ‘gone far away into the silent land’ and the impact this would have on the life of her beloved one ‘it will be late to counsel then or pray’. While primarily concerned with the theme of remembering after loss, the author precludes the possibility of her lover forgetting her ‘yet if you should forget me for a while’ and comforts him about the propriety of it ‘do not grieve’. The poems seem to address a similar issue. In the first one death is looked at negatively with no outcome but sheer ignorance, while the second is seen more brightly as a natural thing after which life goes on and even as something that can be forgotten. The difference is that War Photographer introduces death as something brutal inhuman phenomenon that people should be more concerned with while Remember presents anticipated loss through the eyes of the one to survive. Both poems make use of powerful imagery and enriched vocabulary which contributes to the impact on the reader with respect to the final state of the reader’s emotions. War photographer chooses to focus on metaphors which are more downbeat like ‘all flesh is grass’ in order to show the poet’s protesting attitude towards human suffering provoked by war. Duffy uses the symbolic association of ordinary language. So that a simple word like grass can carry lots of possible meaning. She also includes this powerful imagery to shock us out of our complacency. The poem is highly structured. Each stanza ends with a couplet ‘he has a job to do’, ‘something is happening’, as if to conclude an argument. It helps the poem flow and send out its enlightening message to the community by keeping a temper rather than losing it. On the other hand, in Remember, Rossetti uses strong but subtle vocabulary. Metaphors like ‘silent land’ maintain a generally optimistic view towards the subject of loss and the oxymoron ‘bitter-sweet’ again shows how the poet looks on death as something fear-free. She also uses a regular rhythm ‘remember me when I am gone away’ which adds to the portrayal of something natural and peaceful. As a whole the language is extremely affectively used in order to propose the two different prospects of death. Further more the choice of specific language supports and reinforces the author’s attitude in both poems. In War Photographer the poet is clearly states her dislike towards the ignorance of people with regard to life loss during war. She develops an argument through the eyes of the photographer in order to make us aware of our selfishness. She points this out by saying ‘home again to ordinary pain which simple weather can dispel’. In ‘Rural England’ people are more concerned about the weather but do not bother with more serious problems outside their community circle. The author does not accept the attitude of the society towards death. By contrast in Remember, Rossetti develops the comfortable state of accepting self loss and allowing others to forget and move on ‘better by far you should forget and smile’. While painful in nature this process is presented as possible and even desired. In conclusion the two poems present two opposing views of loss – collective loss and personal loss which also influences the readers’ feelings. In my opinion when compared, the poems provide an understanding that it is only personal loss that provokes a strong sense of sorrow and suffering while death seen as a collective loss can only incite a moral reaction such as disapproval but no further engagement. It is thus natural why I could relate to both poems in different ways. The first poem made me put myself into the position of the addressed reader so I felt morally judged when the second one made me relate to it in a more personal way, this time putting myself into the position of the character’s beloved one.

Barron'sACT Amazon price: about $17 Pros If you're looking for a large amount of content, strategies, and practice questions all in one big ACT prep book, then Barron's ACT is a good choice. It's a traditional prep book with a thorough review of the concepts that will appear on each section of the ACT. It begins with an introduction to the ACT and suggested study plan, followed by an ACT "dress rehearsal," or diagnostic test to measure your initial level. Then it devotes about 50 pages to each section, with test-taking tactics, skills and concepts, question types, and a practice test. Each section also begins with a warm-up drill, about ten or so quick questions. Barron's discusses the main concepts you need for answering Reading questions, like uncoveringmain point, interpreting details, and understanding vocabulary in context. It breaks down the English section by grammar rule, like punctuation, run-on sentences, and subject-verb agreement. Along similar lines, it describes and gives examples for math concepts like algebra and coordinate geometry, and reviews the data representation, research summary, and conflicting viewpoint questions on the science section. Cons The general feeling around Barron's test prep books is that the practice questions are actually more difficult than real ACT questions. Some go beyond the test in terms of the concepts they test, while others are just worded in an overly complex way. While "overpreparing" is not necessarily a bad thing, it could be an ineffective use of your time. Plus Barron's practice tests might not give you the truest sense of your scoring level. While Barron's is very comprehensive, this thoroughness might also be a drawback for some students. The sheer amount of material can feel overwhelming, and it means students have the extra task of breaking up their studying into smaller, more manageable goals. Reading it cover to cover wouldn't be the most effective approach, so you have to break it up into an order that makes sense for you. It talks about how best to use process of elimination, what order to answer the questions in to save time, and how to think through questions that leave you stumped. Each section has drills and example questions. This book also provides six full practice tests, four of which are in the book itself and two online. It has an online LiveScorer for the essay, as well as instant scoring for the online tests. Cons This book has similar downsides as Barron's ACT. As a big, comprehensive book, it can feel overwhelming and be difficult to approach. Since it's a traditional prep book, some students might find its style dry and hard to stay engaged with. McGraw Hill's Top 50 Skills for Math Amazon price: about $14 Pros McGraw Hill's Top 50 Skills for Math, unlike a lot of other math review books,is written in an engaging style. It discusses 50 critical math skills you need for the ACT, along with sample questions illustrating each concept. A particular strength of this ACT prep book is that itwalks you through solving the problems from beginning to end, which can aid your thinking when you're taking the real test. This book has a diagnostic pre-test you can use to assess your skills starting out, as well as a post-test to gauge your progress. Cons Since this book is more focused on teaching the top 50 math skills, it's limited in terms of practice questions. This book would best be used to review concepts alongside the Red Book plus another source of practice questions. While this book is useful for students at all levels, it doesn't provide extra strategies or tips beyond the ordinary. Cons One obvious con is this book is relatively expensive considering it only covers one of the four sections on the ACT. It is helpful for learning and drilling all the grammar rules, but not sufficient as a source of practice questions. While it's helpful that Erica Meltzer groups the questions by skill, the actual ACT will ask these questions randomly. You'll have to move beyond this book to make sure you can identify the skill without it being pre-labeled in the book. The Complete Guide to ACT Reading Amazon price: about $28 Pros Both the reading passages and practice questions are high quality and realistic in Erica Meltzer's The Complete Guide to ACT Reading. Erica Meltzer does a good job of teasing apart the skills you need to develop for this section, which can be harder to identify than, say, the math section. She gives activities to drill each skill, as well as discusses strategies for reading the passages and saving time. For more pieces of advice, you can check out her blog, The Critical Reader. Cons Like her English book, this one is relatively pricey. Bought together, they total roughly $60, and that's only to cover English and Reading. Some students find her writing style to be a bit dry, while others appreciate that it's direct and to the point. While the material is high quality, the layout is not compelling.
